Welcome to Scottish At Heart

A podcast to help you feel more connected to Scotland wherever you live and whatever your ancestry.

Who am I?

Hello, I’m, Alison. I was born in England to a Scottish dad and an English mum and was raised in the UK and Army bases in Europe. I now live in Rotorua, New Zealand with my husband and son.

I always just accepted my Scots ancestry as something that was just there, never really giving much thought or time to the people and places that have shaped me.

Like most people the pandemic was a time of reflection. It coincided with me discovering Outlander, and with the New Zealand borders effectively closed I began to feel home sick.

I’d lived in New Zealand 17 years at that time (now 21) and had never felt so far away.

In 2020 I read all of the Outlander series (and other Diana Gabaldon novellas), I also watched all the seasons (more than once), in 2022 I started tracing my family tree and enrolled in the Scottish Gaelic course on Duolingo.

Last year I added learning the bagpipes and launched this podcast.

On top of all that I love parkrun and pub quizzes.

The love for Scotland shines through!

I love that Alison's passion for Scotland comes through so clearly in these conversations. I'm enjoying learning about my heritage that I really knew very little about. Very interesting conversations that I have enjoyed!
